When questioned about the part narrative plays in her work, the illustrator described how she sees backstories for her characters: "Storytelling is at the center of my creative process. For instance, I was motivated by a picture of an improbable relationship between a golden retriever and a leopard when I initially started working on transforming animals into human beings. It brought to me Nana, the Japanese manga series Ai Yazawa in which two girls with such different personalities get close and encourage one another. This motivated me to design two girls to reflect the dynamic of the animals: one frigid and sassy, the other gentle and lovely. Two opposites cannot be best friends, according to whom?
